MP3 selection from the Belfast Jazz Orchestra's live concerts featuring well-known soloists.
Hopefully no problem downloading mp3 from Tripod server which has much improved (the files are there but at busy periods it can take time!). Try .rm or .WAV (right), if necessary (or get broadband!).

A selection of sound files in MP3  format recommended for  downloading in one go. Streaming does not seem to be very reliable with current technology, particularly for those using modems (see footnote below * from Real Networks about problems of streaming MP3 on Real Player); but no doubt broad-band will change everything! These files sound quite good using Real Player 7 or Real Jukebox (currently, Jan 2000, the most recent version.) Real Player 7 Basic can be downloaded free from Real Player Networks . This is instrumental music and I would recommend setting the EQ on your MP3 player, e.g. Winamp, to "Classical" and possibly some  bass roll-off; its a matter of personal preference but in my experience some MP3 players seem to have a "U" shaped pop/rock EQ curve built in and this distorts the balance from a formation of acoustic instruments. The selection below is swing jazz from a past era but its very popular at the moment in the USA (swing-dance!) where clubs are packed with dancing couples some of them quite young! My son who tours with the Jive Aces tells me that they often play to thousands. This will strike a chord with anyone who was in Ireland in the swinging showband sixties when life for musicians who could stand the pace was very good indeed.
I play a Roland EP7II digital piano throughout the clips (left). Its not the greatest instrument, the treble is quite good but the bass tends to boom and sounds very electronic. The Company is incredibly still fitting a small fragile tuning potentiometer into the back of the instrument, I have had to replace it with something more robust because any sort of vibration could throw the tuning out by half a semitone. Imagine the comments of other musicians on gigs, but I have known a number of people who have had the same problem, what a way to tune a digital instrument in a digital age!
Later in the year I plan to add more MP3 files of music of a different style, please watch this space!

The above are sound files from the Belfast Jazz Orchestra's  concerts at the Belmont Social Club, Circular Rd, Belfast, Northern Ireland.
The performances feature exciting and versatile guest players you will hear on the MP3 clips.
The Jazz Orchestra is now (2006-7) conducted by Marty Wilson.
More guests have been booked for 2003.

* Why do MP3 files streamed over the Internet skip, never play, or suffer audio drop-outs in RealPlayer 7 Basic?
Most MP3 files require considerable bandwidth in order to stream reliably across the Internet (rather than directly from a hard drive). If a MP3 file is being streamed with the HTTP protocol, and the MP3 file was originally recorded with a high quality bit rate, the MP3 file may not stream reliably. This is because the maximum bit rate throughput of the HTTP protocol is 80Kbps, which is insufficient bandwidth to stream most MP3 files.

If you are using a 56k modem, a 56k single ISDN connection, or anything slower, you will have problems playing streamed MP3 files reliably.( http://service.real.com/help/faq/rp7/rpb7known.html#mp3dropout)

e-mailed suggestions welcome on this problem of transmitting reasonable quality music over the net(rh)
